I'm a Singer, Not a Content Creator (So Can I Have Your Videos?)
Social media has changed what people expect from musicians. We need to be photographers, video editors and content creators too. Sometimes I feel like I need to be a full-time content creator!
It's fab, and I love seeing other entertainers' videos. But here's my confession. After some of my very best gigs, I walk away with hardly any footage at all.
Most of the time, I perform as a solo wedding and party singer in Northamptonshire. In a band, there are four, five or six people on stage, and the audience looks at each of them at different moments. When you're solo, it's just you. All eyes in the room are on you, and you're creating all of the energy.
It can feel quite exposing, but it's also what I love. I'm singing to people, making eye contact, reading the room and reacting to what's happening on the dancefloor. That's why I'm living in the moment at your party.
I do try to grab a few photos and little clips throughout the night, and I send them to the wedding couple or the birthday girl or boy afterwards. Looking out from the stage is quite a unique view, and I think it's lovely for them to see the night from my side.
But I never end up with anybody else's footage, and I'd really love to see it.
At almost every gig, I see phones in the air. Guests filming themselves dancing and singing along, and filming me while I sing. I love the professional shots from your photographer and videographer too, but it's the iPhone footage from your guests that I really want. The wedding clips, the birthday clips, the stuff in the pubs. I want it all!
I'm in it, so it's mine, right? Can I have a copy?
